Armed Forces Day in the South Sound

The South Sound has a couple of great options for Saturday.

Armed Forces Day in the South Sound
In 1949, President Harry S Truman declared the third Saturday in May Armed Forces Day to honor Americans serving in the five U.S. military branches. 68 years later, Western Washington’s booming military population makes Armed Forces Day an especially happening celebration, with two big events on Saturday that are great to bring your family to.

Armed Forces Day at JBLM

As you may know, the base has a significant yearly celebration at JBLM’s Cowan and Memorial Stadiums. On Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., the stadiums will host a series of activities for for family and friends.

Living History Groups will include the Tuskegee Airmen, the Washington Civil War Association, the Rogue Historians and much more. They’ll be giving us a taste of our past through captivating historical reenactments.

Children are in for a busy day exploring military displays, the carnival, petting zoo and bounce houses. Entertainment for the event includes Blitz, the Seattle Seahawks mascot, laser tag, clowns, magicians, stilt walkers and face-painting.

Civilians are even able to attend the event and learn more about the military community that’s integral to our area. Drivers must present a valid license, registration and proof of insurance when they enter JBLM. These guests should enter Lewis Main through the DuPont gate. There’ll be directions to a parking area, from which there will be shuttles to and from the event site. More information is provided here.

Armed Services Parade in Bremerton

Each year, Bremerton hosts the longest-running and largest Armed Forces Parade in the country. This year the event starts on Saturday at 10 a.m. and includes all branches of the military, police, firefighters, youth organizations and more. It’s the 69th year of the event, and 25-30,000 are expected to be in attendance. There’ll be plenty of vendors and a Heroes Barbeque free for the active-duty, reserves, retirees and veterans. Get more details on the event here.
