Military Minute - November 14th

On-Base Schooling, Turkey Trots, and USO at JBLM

Military Minute - November 14th
On today's video-free edition of the Military Minute, we're sharing stories about on-base schooling and its possible end, the Turkey Trot and new USO center at JBLM, and another revelation the Green Beret/SEAL murder story.

Pentagon considering ceasing on-base schooling

The Trump administration is considering a plan to end the military’s longtime operation of schools for military children on dozens of stateside military bases, part of a broader push to cut costs and reduce the size of the federal workforce, according to information obtained by Military Times.

The military currently operates 47 schools on military installations in seven states in the continental U.S., serving a total of about 20,000 students. The proposal, which has support from some parts of the Pentagon, would turn over operation of those schools to local school districts.

The proposed “divestiture” of Defense Department stateside schools would not impact the Defense Department-run schools overseas, according to officials familiar with the proposal but who were not authorized to speak publicly about the matter.

Green Beret Death by SEALs Update

Sources close to the investigation into a Green Beret’s death in Africa say the soldier may have discovered that two Navy SEALs, who have since been identified as “persons of interest” in the case, were allegedly stealing cash meant for their mission.

As investigators began to untangle what happened to Staff Sgt. Logan Melgar on June 4 in the embassy housing he shared with two SEALs and another Green Beret in Bamako, Mali, one early detail didn’t add up, according to a report in The Daily Beast.

The two SEALs now under investigation for Melgar’s death by strangulation told investigators that Melgar, 34, was drunk while grappling with the SEALs around 5 a.m. There have not been charges filed in the case.

USO To Open New Center at JBLM

The United Service Organizations, or USO, continually works to strengthen America's military members by keeping them connected to family, home, and country.

To that end, the USO Northwest will soon open the new Camp Lewis USO Center on Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

The site is scheduled to be dedicated Monday, Nov. 20, at 10:30 a.m. in the America's Credit Union building near Waller Hall.
